Adoption Service, Family Placement Unit - June 2007

Do people who
adopt children receive a payment?
Adopters do not generally receive payment. However payments can be
made available to assist with the adoption of hard to place children
such as brother and sister groups, older children who have extra needs
and children with disabilities.
Payments are subject to a financial assessment being made on the adopter.
This is in addition to the child's needs being identified. If an adoption
allowance is approved it can continue as long as the child is in full-time
education, subject to the annual financial assessment.
The Family Placement Unit can provide a grant to buy basic equipment
such as a bed and bedroom furniture in circumstances such as those
outlined above.
