How do I adopt a
child?
Kirklees places 25/30 children each year for adoption. Many of these
children are older children, children with a disability or brothers
and sisters. In common with other councils Kirklees have few babies
for adoption. Many children who we place for adoption have been removed
from their parents for their own welfare.

Where can I find more
information about adopting a child?
British Agency Adopting and Fostering (BAAF) is an independent organisation and charity,
promoting the highest standards of child centred policies and services
for children separated from their families of origin. Visit their
web site at www.baaf.org.uk.
Alternatively you can contact Fostering
& adoption (KMC).
Why do Children and Young People's Service
keep files?
The law says that whenever we work with a family or a young person
we must keep accurate and up to date records. We keep records about
all the people we provide services for.
Can I see my file?
Yes. The law says that you have the right to see your file. Occasionally,
if there are special circumstances, we may refuse to let you see all
or part of your file. If you are not allowed to see your file, we
must tell you why, and you can appeal against our decision to the
chief social services officer.
What if I do not agree
with the information in my file?
If we agree with you that some of the information is wrong, we will
correct it. If we do not agree with you, you can ask us to record
in your file that you do not agree with the information.
Who can look at my file?
The information that we keep about you can only be shown to other
people if you give permission, if a court order is made, or if the
law says we must do so. Parents can usually see information about
their children. We will tell you within 28 days if you can see your
file. We will then tell you within 40 days what arrangements have
been made for you to do this.
