How Do We Support Parents and Carers?

Pauline Swindells - June 2006
pauline.swindells@kirklees.gov.uk

We give information about:
  • the legal position, procedures and processes relating to a child's special educational needs
  • the local and national support services for parents and children
  • types of resources and support services
  • parents' and carers' rights and responsibilities

We offer impartial advice on:

  • how to work in partnership with schools, Local Educational Officers, other Services and other people who can be involved with your child
  • how to prevent and resolve conflict relating to your child's educational needs
We offer different types of support to parents and carers, for example:
  • emotional support, where we will listen to your worries and experiences without a limit on the amount or number of times we spend with you.
  • when you are meeting with your child's teachers about their IEP and when you are invited to attend your child's Annual Review, or when you are asked to other meetings where you have to give opinions on your child's progress and needs, we can help you to prepare or attend those meetings.
  • we help parents in other types of meetings such as where they disagree with school staff and other professionals on an aspect of their child's education. In the child's best interests, we work to resolve difficulties and avoid conflict.
We assist parents in setting up parents groups.

We support existing parents groups by:
  • giving information
  • offering advice
  • attending meetings
  • delivering training
