Disagreements

Do you have a disagreement with your child's school or with the Local Education Authority (LEA)?
There may be a time when you do not agree with the decisions or provisions made by schools or the LEA for your child's special educational needs (SEN). Your local Parent Partnership Officer will often be able to help sort out disagreements at this stage.

Local Education Authorities now have to also provide an independent mediation service to help when there is a disagreement about meeting the needs of a child with SEN. The Yorkshire & Humberside SEN Mediation Service is the service set up to help sort out disagreements in Yorkshire & Humberside. The people involved in the dispute work together to reach an acceptable solution, with the help of a mediator.

The mediator is an independent facilitator (someone there to help) who has had special training. The mediator does not take sides and does not give advice or make judgements

The mediator keeps the child's needs and interests at the heart of the discussions. Parents and carers do not have to pay to use the mediation service.
