The help guide is intended for parents and carers of children with a wide range of disabilities including physical and learning disabilities, sensory impairments and chronic conditions.
One of the hardest things about having a disabled child can be the constant struggle to be as ordinary a family as any other and for your children to be accepted on equal terms with others. Especially in a society where many people are ambivalent about disability and where there is a discrimination against disabled people at many levels.
Families who have not come across disability at a personal level before may need to start using services and benefits they were previously unaware of.
This means that knowing what kind of service to ask for and what should be provided by statutory agencies is important in enabling families to get the help they need. This help guide signposts the services available within Kirklees alongside many of the National Charities/Organisations which take care of disabled children.
There are a wide range of services in Kirklees to help and support
children with a disability and their parents. These services come
under four main areas -
- education
- health
- social services
- voluntary
groups.
For some services you can find out more by contacting the team direct,
for others you will need to go through a health professional (such
as your family doctor or health visitor) or a Gateway to Care.
