  • Child Development Centres (CDC) - treat and assess babies and young children with special needs.

  • Family Doctors (General Practitioners – GP’s) - look after a family’s general health and can refer you to other specialists, if necessary.

  • Paediatricians - specialist children’s doctor who diagnoses and treats babies, children and adolescents with medical problems or are not developing properly.

  • Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) - supports patients, carers and relatives in resolving concerns and answering queries about their health services.

  • Health Visitor - a registered nurse who takes specialises in health education and preventative care. Your health visitor can be contacted through your local health centre or surgery.


  • Occupational Therapists (OT’s) - helps children develop daily living skills such as dressing, feeding, bathing. They can also give advice on special equipment and adaptations in the home.
  • Speech and Language Therapists - provide therapy to overcome speech and communication problems.

  • Physiotherapists - are health care professionals trained in therapeutic exercise.

  • Hearing Clinic - if your child is having hearing difficulties tell your family doctor, health visitor, school doctor or nurse. They may then refer your child to a special hearing clinic or hospital .

  • Eye Clinic - if your child is having difficulties they may be referred to a Community Orthoptist Clinic or an ophthalmologist.

  • Dental Services - A full range of dental services is provided for children of all ages as well as adults with special needs who do not receive their care from a general dental practice.

  • Community Learning Disability Teams - give support to children with a learning disability and their families.

  • School Doctors and Nurses - visit every school in Kirklees and work closely with teachers.
  • Community Children’s Doctors - specially trained doctors who have expertise in examining and checking young children’s development.

  • Child and Family Psychological Service - includes clinical psychologists and specialist nurses who work with child psychiatrists if necessary.

  • Child Psychiatrists- specialist in treating mental health problems of children and young people.

  • Dietician - helps any child who needs a special diet such as those with diabetes, an allergy or a weight problem or a child who needs an assessment because of poor growth, poor weight gain or a feeding difficulty.
  • Continence Advisory Service - for advice about a bladder or bowel problem, contact your family doctor, district nurse or health visitor.

  • Mobility Equipment (including Orthotics) - advice on mobility equipment including orthotics (such as a walking frame or built-up shoe ). You may need to see a physiotherapist and if so, you will be referred by a paediatrician or community family doctor.

  • Wheelchair Service - Wheelchairs are supplied and maintained by the National Health Service free of charge to anyone whose ability to walk is limited and who needs this long-term or permanently. Health Related Contact Information
