Amazing health benefits could be yours for just 30 minutes of
moderate physical activity a day at least five times a week - whether you do it
all at once or just 10 minutes at a time. Don't be daunted, just a few changes
to your everyday life.
- you'll look better and feel great
- have fun
- you'll feel less stressed
- it can help you relax and sleep better
- it reduces the risk of coronary heart disease
- you'll feel better in mind, body and spirit
- being active can help control your weight and keep you in good shape
- helps to control blood pressure
- helps to keep you mobile and independent (particularly in later life)
- it's a good way to make friends and develop new interests
- have more energy to do the things that you want to do
- builds confidence
- improves flexibility, mobility
- lower the risk of osteoporosis (brittle bones) in later life
And it doesn't have to cost a lot.
Being active can be free, cost only a very small amount or even save you money
- and the benefits to your health can be outstanding!
Try some of the following: -
- walking locally
- catching the bus and exploring the countryside
- leaving the car and walking to the nearest shop
- playing ball games in the park rather than going to the cinema
And best of all it's fun, and you can do it at home, at work, with friends, on
your own, with family - so get going today.
Keeping going
So you've made an effort to get started and hopefully you're starting to feel
a little better about yourself and life in general. Hopefully you've been able
to make some small changes in your lifestyle to help you become more active every
day. But how to keep it going?
Here's some tips:
- make those small changes a habit
- vary some of things you do - different walks, shorter or longer routes
- get someone to join you
- try something new or different
- find out what's going on near you and get involved
- set yourself a target - and reward yourself when you achieve it
- recognise improvements - can you walk further or faster more easily.
