Swimming - take the plunge

Helen Heaton - January 2007

Swimming is the activity most inactive adult people say they would like to try. There are plenty of reasons to take the plunge so find out what's on at your local pool www.kirkleesactive.co.uk

Adult learn to swim

It's never too late to learn to swim and each pool in Kirklees offers an adult learn to swim programme with friendly, qualified instructors to help you along the way.

Why swim?

  • 30 minutes of steady paced lane swimming burns over 200 calories - well over 400 in an hour.
  • Even treading water takes water so you are working most of the time you're in the pool. 30minutes of activity in the water is worth 45minutes of the same activity on land as the pressure and resistance of the water makes your body work that bit harder.
  • Swimming works your whole body for all over toning!
  • The water takes your weight, so swimming can be great for those want low impact exercise - for example women during pregnancy or people who have mobility problems or want to protect their joints.
  • Being in water can take you away from it all so you end up feeling refreshed and relaxed.
