Cycle routes

In the last few years Kirklees Council has been working hard to deliver new cycling facilities to support leisure cycling and provide routes for journeys to work and school.

One of the most successful projects is the Spen Valley Greenway, which is a 7½ mile off-road surfaced route between Thornhill Lees (from the Calder & Hebble Navigation) in the south and Oakenshaw on the boundary with Bradford district. Bradford Council have Kirklees Council is also developing the Calder Valley Greenway between Bradley and Dewsbury and there are opportunities to extend to route to Brighouse (Calderdale) and Horbury Bridge (Wakefield).

The Birkby Bradley Greenway is signed from Huddersfield Railway Station and connects to the Calder Valley route at Bradley.

There are plans to develop a route along disused rail line to Kirkburton, one 400m section of which has been constructed at Fenay Bridge.

Improvements to the existing public path on the rail corridor from Meltham to Meltham Mills are underway at winter 2007/08.

Cycling maps and guides

Published by Kirklees Council
Two cycling maps and guides have been published by Kirklees Council.

The Huddersfield & Central Kirklees map covers the areas from Huddersfield to Dewsbury, showing all existing cycling facilities. It can be used by people planning journeys to work, school and shopping and also to go out and explore Kirklees by bicycle.

The Spen Valley & North Kirklees map cover the area north of Dewsbury.

The publications use easy-to-read street maps showing cycle lanes, shared pedestrian and cycle pavements, off-road greenway routes and the public rights of way network available to cyclists.

The publication also brings the following information together for the first time:
  • cycling contacts
  • local bike shops
  • cycling clubs
  • road signs for cyclists
  • cycling and health
  • listing of other local cycling publications.
The maps are in full-colour and free. You can order them from our Request a brochure page. They are also available from tourist information centres, Kirklees Information Points, libraries, bike shops, sports centres and direct from ROSS Streetcare on Freefone 0800 731 8765.
