| A well-kept allotment. |
There are about 1874 allotments in Kirklees on around 100 sites. Allotments vary in shape and size but the majority
are about 200 square yards and ideal for the enthusiastic gardener. Most allotments have access to a water supply.
Having an allotment means you can grow your own fresh fruit and vegetables, enjoy the fresh air and keep yourself
healthy with a little exercise.
It's also a great way to meet friends and relax.
You can choose what you grow on your allotment and with planning permission, you can put up a greenhouse or garden shed.
On certain sites you are allowed to keep a few hens and rabbits.
Each year there is a competition for Best Site and Best Individual Plot selected by variety and layout of the site,
cultivation, weed control and overall cleanliness.
Some sites have a Site Secretary who is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the site and makes sure that
everything is running smoothly.

How do you rent an allotment?
Allotments are available to rent from different agencies:
From Kirklees Council
Most allotments can be rented from Kirklees Culture and Leisure Services for an annual rent, with a small service
charge covering general maintenance and upkeep of fences and hedges, and provision of skips for clearing rubbish from
the site.
From allotment societies
Applications should be made to the secretary of the society directly.
From parish councils
You must live in the parish and need to apply directly to the clerk of the appropriate parish councils.
From private sites
Apply directly to the secretary of the site concerned.
