Active for Life

Walking, cycling, gardening and DIY are all excellent ways to be active and can make a big difference to your health.
By building in 30 minutes (just 2% of your day) of activity into your everyday way of life, you can drastically
reduce your risk of coronary heart disease, of having a stroke, you can control your blood pressure and your weight
and added to all this you'll feel healthier and fitter.
Being active is also a great way to beat stress, help you sleep better and relax. It's also an easy way to meet
other people, try out something new and the best thing is it doesn't have to cost a lot to do.
Many people believe that you have to join a gym or run a marathon to be active enough to be healthy. Well, these are
great ways of keeping fit but don't suit everybody and there are lots of other ways of having an active lifestyle.
You just need to do enough to feel a little out of breath (but still able to have a chat), feel slightly warm and a
little sweaty and feel your muscles work a bit harder than usual.
Did you know?
- It's estimated that 33% of all coronary heart disease, 25% of strokes and type 2 diabetes could be
avoided with regular physical activity.
- Mowing the lawn for 30 minutes burns off the calories in a doughnut.
- One hour's housework is equivalent to 19 minutes of rock climbing.
- Over 35,000 people in Britain die due to physical inactivity.
