Safe baby sitting - for teenagers

Kirklees Safeguarding Children Board - June 2007
gatewaytocare@kirklees.gov.uk

This advice has been produced by the Kirklees Safeguarding Children Board to help aid safe baby sitting.

For teenage babysitters

  • Ideally you should be 16 years old or over.
  • Ask to meet the child before you do any babysitting
  • Make sure you know what to do in an emergency
  • Always ask what you can or cannot eat
  • Ask the parents who is allowed to come into their house.
  • Make sure the house is safe and secure before the parents leave. This could mean for example, securing doors and windows and making sure the fireguard is in place.
  • Tell your parents where you are going. Write down the names of the people you are babysitting for, their address and their telephone number.
  • Tell your parents what time you expect to be home.
  • Make arrangements beforehand for getting home safely.

Remember: If you do not feel comfortable and confident - do not do it!
