Coping with a crying baby

The following advice has been produced by the Kirklees Safeguarding Children Board to help keep your baby safe.

Babies cry for many different reasons. If the baby is very young it is usually because they may be hungry, tired, cross or unwell. Babies also cry at times where they feel insecure or unsafe. Some babies seem to cry more than others; some babies seem to be quite 'colicky'.

There are many people who can help you if you are worried about your baby. You can ask for help and advice from your health visitor, GP or midwife - all these people are there to help.

Looking after a young baby is very hard work and can be very stressful, but please don't worry you don't have to cope alone.

How to cope with the stress of a crying baby

If you think the baby is ill, call your doctor.

When you've done your best, but the baby is still crying:
  • put the baby in a safe place and leave the room
  • have a cup of tea and put on the radio
  • call a friend or relative
  • call a helpline
When you feel calmer, go back to the baby.

Never, never shake a baby.

Crying babies can be stressful but shaking them can cause brain damage, blindness, or even death.
