Sustainable Energy - Getting started

Renewable energy This two day event took place on 4th and 5th September 2007. Over 100 delegates from all over the UK attended, and represented other councils, housing associations, building professionals and those generally interested in renewable energy.

Kirklees Council gained national recognition for their pioneering work in renewable energy and combating climate change through the Ashden Sustainable Energy Awards 2006 for the SunCities project. SunCities is a European Commission funded project which began in 2000 and was completed in February 2006. Through the project a total of 351kWp solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and 63 solar thermal systems were installed. Around 518 households were involved, including elderly tenants and families with young children.

In the morning we visited 3 sites across Kirklees which are part of Suncities - the UK's largest solar village:

  • Primrose Hill solar village
  • Fernside solar village, Almondbury
  • Castle Grange Care Home, Newsome
