Renewable energy policy

Lisa Herron - February 2007

Kirklees Council strongly supports the further development of renewable energy in the district. As a result of its energy programme to date, Kirklees Council was described as the "greenest" local authority in the Guardian Newspaper in December 2005 and again in January 2007. Local surveys and feedback shows very strongly that the public would like to see Kirklees Council 'leading by example' in terms of practical energy measures and 76% of residents in Kirklees Council's citizen panel 'Talkback' think that the Council should require developers to install renewable energy in new buildings.

The council has set ambitious targets for the use of renewable energy in the district. By 2010/11 all new council buildings will meet 30% of their energy demand from on-site renewable energy sources. Kirklees also aims to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases by greater than 30% (via a 3% annual decrease) over the next 15 years (2005 -2020) against a 2005 baseline.

Non-residential developments above a threshold of 500m2 along with all residential developments (new build, renovation or conversion) will aim to provide energy through incorporation of renewable energy sources to reduce predicted carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by at least 10% by 2010, 15% up until 2015 and 20% up until 2020.
