In April 2006, local authorities were given new powers under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 to deal
with nuisance from artificial light. The legislation applies to all types of premises with the exception of transport
facilities, freight depots, lighthouses, defence premises and prisons.
Useful information about light pollution and light nuisance can be found on the Environment Protection UK website:
If you use external lighting, to minimise the likelihood of causing light nuisance you might wish to consider:
- Is the lighting necessary? Do the lights need to be left on all night? Can security be achieved by other means?
- Has the lighting been carefully selected, properly designed and installed? Only the right amount of light for the
task should be installed. Are lights correctly adjusted so that they only illuminate the surface intended and do not
throw light onto neighbouring property? Are security lights adjusted so that they only pick up the movement of persons
in the area intended and not beyond? Can shields and baffles be used to prevent light being directed upwards?
