What is Kirklees doing about air pollution?
All Councils in England have to assess air pollution in their area and decide whether it will meet the standards set by the Government by a certain deadline date. A review and assessment of air pollution levels was completed in January 2001. The pollutants assessed are:

Nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide; fine particles (PM10); Carbon Monoxide; Lead; Benzene; 1-3 butadiene.

The assessment concludes that air quality objectives for these pollutants will be achieved in Kirklees.

Some industries are required by law to be authorised by either the Environment Agency or the local Council. In these cases the amount of pollution that can be emitted from a site is set out in the authorisation. What is the air pollution like in Kirklees?
The government sets four basic levels or "bands" for defining air pollution; Low, Medium, High, and Very High. Results from the monitoring within Kirklees are given to the Press Association each day and normally are in the "Low" category.
