Developing a green network in Kirklees

Environment Unit - August 2007
environment.unit@kirklees.gov.uk

In January 2007 Kirklees Council agreed to:

"Develop a plan for a comprehensive green network for the whole of the borough, as part of our Green Ambition making Kirklees a Beacon of green living."

The green network is part of the new Kirklees Council 'Green Ambition' to become a beacon of green living.  Find out more about the Green Ambition.

What is a green network?

A green network is a planned network of formal and informal green spaces which are multifunctional in their use.  It will provide opportunities for:
  • People - traffic free routes for non-motorised transport and passive recreation
  • Wildlife - creating and managing more habitats for wildlife including green corridors to connect habitats.
  • Outdoor recreation - creating opportunities to get active in a natural environment such as walking, canoeing, orienteering etc
  • Natural flood storage - working to reinstate natural drainage capacity of river systems and water storage.
