Environment Unit - July 2008

At Kirklees Council, we have been committed to tackling climate change for many years, and have been working hard to reduce our impacts on the environment.  One of our four ambitions is for Kirklees to become ‘a beacon for green living’.

The council has a Green Ambition Statement of intent which outlines what the council’s objectives are.

Environmental management and carbon reduction

Kirklees Council recognises that is has an impact on the environment through the delivery of its services directly and indirectly through its procurement processes, use of suppliers and contactors and policy development.

To help manage its carbon emissions the council is registered to EMAS (ECO – Management and Audit Scheme) which helps the council to plan and prioritize its actions to reduce carbon emissions.

Improving energy efficiency for our residents

warmzone logoFor many years we have been working hard to reduce householders’ carbon footprints, by improving the energy efficiency of their homes. This work has culminated in the production of an Affordable Warmth Strategy for Kirklees, which aims to make a difference to the energy efficiency of homes, affordability of energy, and health and welfare of Kirklees residents.   Kirklees was recently designated a Warm Zone, which means that every suitable home is entitled to free loft and cavity wall insulation, and advice about how to reduce the carbon footprint of their home.

Renewable Energy

Kirklees Council has undertaken a number of renewable energy projects across the district, to help reduce emissions in our own buildings and in Kirklees homes.

Through a number of different funding streams we have installed a variety of renewable energy technologies on many different types of property such as; care homes, schools, council buildings, luxury apartments, and social housing.

Kirklees Council is also offering loans to our residents to help them install a form of renewable energy on their property.  To find out more, please call Kirklees Council on 01484 223618 and ask about the RE-Charge scheme.

Recycling and Waste in Kirklees

Kirklees Council is working hard to help people in Kirklees increase the amount that they recycle. The Council is currently rolling out a programme of increased recycling across the district; doubling the frequency of green bin collections. We have also increased kerbside glass recycling.

Sustainable Transport

Kirklees Council is working on a number of schemes to help develop more sustainable travel for the district, both for its own workers and the residents of Kirklees.

Green Network

The council is comitted to developing a plan for a comprehensive green network for the whole district.  The Green Network is a planned network of multi use cycleways, footpaths, horse riding routes, canal routes, public rights of way, wildlife sites, green spaces and greenway linkages.

Travel Plans

Kirklees Council is currently contributing to the West Yorkshire Local Transport Plan (LTP), covering all modes of transport, buses, trains, roads, cycling and walking, to help make travel in Kirklees more sustainable.  This plan is produced through the partnership of the five West Yorkshire districts of Kirklees, Bradford, Wakefield, Calderdale and Leeds, as well as West Yorkshire Metro.
