95% of survey respondents believed that the world's climate is changing, 74% that their everyday actions
contribute towards climate change. Females were more concerned about climate change than males.
The highest proportion of respondents to the survey (86%) agreed that climate change would have an impact
on Kirklees in the next 50 years. During the young people's focus group there was a discussion about how
climate change does not seem as immediate or important as other concerns in the wider media or in people's
everyday lives.
The majority of survey respondents and focus group participants said that they were already recycling,
reducing household waste, being careful about energy use in the home and cutting down on use of plastic bags.
Saving money, convenience/services making it easy and health benefits were survey respondents' top three
motivations to live a greener lifestyle. Only one in ten survey respondents supported Government compulsion
to change behaviours.
We aim to:
- Continue to work to raise awareness of the existence of climate change and the role of human
behaviour and lifestyles in contributing towards climate change.
- Continue to promote the potential for local people to save money by living a greener lifestyle,
and deliver and promote services that make it easy for local people to change their behaviours.
Potential health benefits of living a greener lifestyle should also be promoted.
- Develop understanding of attitudes towards climate change in particular localities and among
different demographic groups in Kirklees.
