What businesses can do to help combat climate change

Environment Unit - July 2008

Thinking about climate change makes business sense - things that help lessen the effects of climate change can often be translated into money savings. Extreme weather events caused by climate change will also have a detrimental effect on business operations.

The green business network

The Green Business Network (GBN) is an award-winning not-for-profit business support organisation delivering environmental advice and projects.

Thanks to funding from Kirklees Council, the Green Business Network are able to offer any business in Kirklees a free environmental audit to help them reduce their environmental impact and to save money. We have also produced environmental toolkits, for various business sectors (e.g. manufacturing, retail, office and hospitality) that are again free to businesses in Kirklees.

The toolkits detail many practical solutions to cut energy and water use, avoid pollution incidents, and reduce waste, as well as suggestions on green travel and green purchasing. The toolkit also details current environmental legislation, a list of local recyclers and where to go to for further help and advice.

There are several things that both small and larger businesses can do to help reduce their impacts on the environment, and there are lots of organisations that can help you to do so.

In small businesses

  • Have you put someone in charge of monitoring and reducing your water and energy use and waste production?
  • Have you had free professional advice from Envirowise (Telephone: 0800 585794) to reduce resource costs?
  • Are you a member of the Green Business Support Organisation, run by business in the community? (Telephone: 0113 205 8200)

In larger companies

  • Have you implemented an environmental management system in your company?
  • Have you sought assistance from the Carbon Trust (Telephone: 0800 085 2005) to reduce your energy costs?
  • Do you know what your climate risk is and do you actively manage it?
  • Do you invest in companies that are exposed to climate risk or produce significant greenhouse gas emissions?
  • Do you influence your supply chain?
