Affordable warmth not fuel poverty
Lisa Herron - November 2007

Householders who spend more than 10% of their income on energy bills (heating, hot water, lighting and cooking) are considered to be 'fuel poor'. Cold damp housing is a major cause of winter illness and deaths (due to respiratory and cardiovascular disease), especially in the old and very young. In Kirklees 45,000 households are thought to be living in fuel poverty.
Kirklees Council are working together with the NHS, local and national charities (such as Age Concern and Citizens Advice Bureau), Kirklees Energy Services, and local tenants and residents groups. This work will ensure that all Kirklees residents can afford to heat their home, can have energy efficient housing and will receive the financial support they are entitled to.
In September 2007 the Affordable Warmth Strategy for Kirklees was launched, which aims to ‘Make a difference to the energy efficiency of homes, affordability of energy and health and welfare of Kirklees residents.’
