2007: Kirklees Air Quality Strategy
This strategy outlines the approach Kirklees takes for:
- achieving and maintaining good air quality in Kirklees
- informing other strategies and developing plans where air quality is a linking theme
- identifying the responsibilities of different stakeholders
- providing a framework for decisions about development proposals where air quality should be considered at an early stage
- setting out the approach to development control (planning applications) where air quality is a material consideration
- highlighting initiatives involving the Council demonstrating best practice for minimising pollution
This first strategy sets out broad aims and objectives alongside a position statement, and then sets a target
for developing more specific action plan targets and objectives.
2006: Update and Screening Assessments
This Updating and Screening Assessment (USA) reviews the situation in Kirklees following the last Progress Report
in 2005, the last Detailed Assessment in 2004, and the last Updating and Screening Assessment in 2003.
This report identifies areas where further detailed investigation of air quality is required prior to May 2007.
It makes the following conclusions:
- Air quality objectives(AQOs) for carbon monoxide, lead, benzene and 1-3 butadiene will be met and no area of Kirklees requires further detailed investigation
- Further investigation of nitrogen dioxide and PM10 (particulates smaller than 10µ in diameter) will be required in several areas, specifically those where there are busy roads and junctions

2005: Progress Report on Local Air Quality
This is the first annual report on air quality produced, and is written in accordance with the guidance given
in LAQM.PRG(03) "Progress Report Guidance".
Three new continuous monitoring stations were acquired in 2004, giving a total of six continuous monitoring
stations.
A network of 55 NO2 tube sites is maintained in Kirklees, along with 2 smoke and SO2 "bubbler" stations.
Monitoring of background gamma radiation is carried out at 4 locations each month (since 1987) and this is reported
on for the first time in this document.

2004: Detailed Assessment of Air Quality
Local Authorities must periodically review and assess air quality in their areas. This detailed assessment
examines air quality in areas identified in the 2003 Updating and Screening Assessment as possibly likely to
exceed national standards. There are four areas reviewed for compliance with the nitrogen dioxide annual
objective:
M62 Corridor
A62 Leeds Road Huddersfield to Cooper Bridge
Dewsbury Ring Road area
Birstall Smithies Cross Roads area
There is one area reviewed for compliance with the sulphur dioxide objective.
