Revising using eLearning improves GCSE grades (New independent report)

Over 105,000 Year 11 students were analysed in a new independent report, which proves that using eLearning such as SAM learning, which Kirklees council has provided free of charge to help pupils prepare for GCSE exams really does improve grades.

Exam results of 105,163 Year 11 students from 1,006 secondary schools were analysed - a total of one in six of students taking GCSEs. The research found that pupils who used eLearning for as little as 10 hours achieved 4.7 per cent more 5+ A* to C GCSE grades than expected, based on prior attainment.

Main findings of the report include:
  • Students with over 10 hours use of eLearning achieved 4.7 per cent more 5+ A* to C GCSE grades than expected based on prior attainment. The value added is the equivalent of one-quarter of a GCSE grade per subject.
  • Improvement, in terms of overall GCSE points score, is greatest for students in middle and lower groups. In terms of attainment of 5+ A* to C GCSE passes, improvement is greatest for middle attainment groups, particularly where levels of use are above 10 hours.
  • For pupils in the lowest attainment band, using eLearning for 10 hours or more achieved gains of nearly half a grade. This is the equivalent of 50 per cent of students achieving one grade higher than expected.
David Jaffa, Managing Director, SAM Learning, explains,

This new report proves that there is a positive relationship between the use of eLearning and exam results. ELearning is shown to improve results across the board as it is so motivational for children. This is the third year running that a report has been produced by the Fischer Family Trust on the impact of eLearning on GCSE grades. In 2003 figures found that pupils who used eLearning for 10 hours or more achieved 4.5 per cent more 5+ A* to C GCSE grades than expected, based on prior attainment and we are pleased to see that this figure has risen to 4.7 per cent in 2004. We are expecting 200,000 GCSE students to be using SAM Learning in 2005 and we are looking forward to seeing how pupils' use of the service impacts upon GCSE results this August.
