How parents can help
Together we'll succeed - March 2007

School tests and exams are coming up – how can parents and carers help children and young people do their best?
Come to one of the Parents Supporting Learning Events. We will be running these after the Easter holidays. Please contact your school for further information.
Did you know that your support is eight times more important to your child’s success at school than things like your income and your social class?
“Interested parents make a huge difference” says Dr Leon Feinstein of the London School of economics.
Kirklees Council has recognised this. A programme of activities over the next three years is aimed at helping parents to help their children.
We are featuring some of the things the young people have said in our campaign:
“It’s pointless just making endless notes. I need to work in different ways to stay interested.”
“Some of my friends work best at night but I’m a morning person so I do most of my revision then.”
“When my mind is tired I don’t remember as well, so I need to take short breaks and walk around. It gets more oxygen to my brain and it works better.”

So what can you do to give your children the best chance of success?
“I make sure he knows I just want him to do his best, you can’t expect more than that.”
“I’ve made sure I know everything about preparing for the test. I’ve been to a special parents’ meeting.”
“I keep telling her, the tests are her chance to show off what she’s learnt!”
“As each test is finished, I encourage him to talk it through. If he’s made any mistakes it doesn’t help dwelling on them.”
