Feed your body and your brain at exam time
Food 4 Thought is about making sure that you feed your body and your brain.
  • Get some sleep! At least 8 hours.
  • Make sure that you have breakfast.
  • Think about what you have for lunch and try to make it a healthy option.
  • Make sure that your brain has fuel! Drink water every day.

Space your drinking out over the day so that you never get to the point when you are feeling thirsty. You won’t work well if your brain dries up.
  • Avoid fizzy drinks. Most fizzy drinks have loads of sugar and other things in them that won’t help your brain to work at its best.
  • Snacks are great, they can keep your energy level up but think about what you snack on.
  • Many sweets are full of sugar and fat. To fill that gap in your stomach and to feed your brain look for things that are more healthy. Fruit makes a good change, BANANAS ARE GREAT BRAIN FOOD, but there are many other healthy snacks around.

Try

  • Different fruit
  • Carrot, celery, pepper sticks and other veggies with dips
  • Packets of dried fruit
  • Cereal bars – keep an eye on the sugar
  • Fruit loaf
  • Flapjack
Tests and Exam Weeks
Your school will give you free water and fruit or snacks before every GCSE and Key Stage 2 test.
So grab it, drink it, eat it and feed your body and brain and make sure you do the best you can.

Water is brain food!

water bottles
  • Did you know that water regulates body temperature, carries oxygen to all cells in the body and helps convert food into energy.?
  • Did you know that the human brain is 75% water and that by being even slightly dehydrated it can cause dizziness or headaches?
  • Did you know that by the time you actually feel thirsty it’s often too late? 20% of your brain can have shut down and therefore you’ll find it harder to think and harder to concentrate.
  • Why not other drinks? Fizzy ones for example? Well, because they’re full of additives and preservatives and when your body is short of pure water these ingredients can be quite bad for you.

You will be given a sports bottle of water before every GCSE exam or Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 test this year to keep you alert and healthy. Do the same at home too during your revision. In fact make it a habit for life!
