Net 4 Pupils

Children & Young People Service - February 2010
communication@kirklees.gov.uk

Kirklees Council is trialling low-cost wireless internet access for pupils in some parts of Dewsbury, Batley and Huddersfield. The council is testing this technology to see if it can improve internet access for pupils – and improve their education.

To do this ‘access points’ have been fixed to lampposts in residential areas around some local schools. These are similar to access points already used across the country found in schools, town centres, hotels, airports, offices and trains.

A group of ‘access points’ that are connected together provides an area with wireless internet access. So if the project is successful, we may be able to extend this wireless internet access to other groups of local people.

What is the device on the lamp post?

It is a WiFi access point providing access to the Internet.

Why is it there?

It is for some pupils in local schools to give them access to the internet from their homes. The council is testing this technology to see if it can improve internet access for pupils – and improve their education.

Is it safe?

Yes. The national Health Protection Agency has responsibility for the public’s health and safety. They do not consider there to be a problem with safety of WiFi technology.

Is it only available to pupils?

Yes. This is a pilot specifically aimed at improving the education of local pupils.

What happens when the pilot finishes?

If the pilot is successful the project will continue. And we will make it available for other schools.
If it is successful it may be useful for everyone in these areas – not just pupils

Can it interfere with my home WiFi or my TV reception?

No. They are designed so that they don’t interfere with other devices.

Who is running the project?

Kirklees Council is working with schools on this project.
