What is home teaching?
Home teaching is part of ETHOS (Educating Those Out of School) and provides education for children who are, for a variety of reasons, mainly medical, unable to attend school.

A team of fully qualified experienced teachers is employed by the Local Education Authority to undertake home teaching.

Teachers within ETHOS have a wide range of subject expertise and the team includes teachers who are trained for specific key stages.

The amount of home teaching varies according to individual circumstances and is available during term time.

What is the procedure for a child being taught at home?
After it has been agreed that the pupil should received education at home, a home teacher is allocated and parents, school teachers and educational social workers are informed.

The home teacher visits the home to arrange times of teaching and also spends some time in the pupil's school in consultation with the pupil's teachers. This is particularly important to ensure continuity of education for the pupil.

A programme of work which maintains the continuity of the National Curriculum is agreed between the teachers in school and the home teacher.

This programme is then carried out by the home teacher who also ensures that regular contact is maintained within the school.

GCSE and other external examination work may be continued. As ETHOS is a registered examination centre, public examinations can be taken at home during a period of home teaching under the supervision of the home teacher. Arrangements for this are negotiated between the home teacher, the school's examination officer and the Examination Board.

Home teaching will be reviewed regularly and if a problem arises a meeting will be arranged to agree appropriate action. Misuse of the provision could result in a reduction or withdrawal of teaching time.

What parental support is required for pupils who are taught at home?
A responsible adult should be on the premises at all times unless a mutual agreement or understanding with the home teacher is reached wherby that person is able to leave.

Parents can help their child in the following ways:-
  • by making sure that the pupil is ready for lessons, with all necessary books etc at the time agreed
  • by providing a space for the teacher and the pupil in a room which is quiet and free from distractions
  • by encouraging the pupil to complete all the tasks set by the home teacher
  • by making sure that all books, equipment etc. are kept safe
  • by informing the teacher in advance if a lesson has to be cancelled or re-arranged because of very important commitments e.g. hospital visits
  • by encouraging the pupil to keep in touch with school friends

Will a child who is taught at home be taken on educational visits?
It may sometimes be possible and desirable to take the pupil out of the home on educational visits.

The written consent of a parent or guardian is needed before a home teacher may take a pupil out.

Will a child who is taught at home go back to being taught in a school?
When home teaching is provided a date is set when the situation will be reviewed.

If at this review, it is agreed that the child is able to return to the school, then the child should return on the agreed date. If there are any difficulties with this, the home teacher may be able to help.

Sometimes a parent feel that the child is ready to return to school before the review date. In such cases the parent may wish to discuss this with the home teacher or to contact the Senior Teacher at ETHOS.

If parents have any queries or problems about home teaching they should not hesitate to contact the Senior Teacher at ETHOS at the address above.
