About the Graduate Teacher Programme

The Graduate Teacher Programme is a highly competitive route into teaching. The trainee is employed in a school as an unqualified teacher. The school has the lead responsibility for the training, and is monitored and supported by the Kirklees Partnership for Employment-based Teacher Training (ETT) tutors and experienced trainers.

What qualifications and experience do you need?

The majority of our training places are funded with a salary and the trainee will be employed as supernumerary to the teaching staff of the school. The programme is designed for those who have skills and potential to train as teachers, who have suitable sustained school experience with the appropriate age range, and who may be career changers. GTP is not appropriate for those completing a degree and who do not have significant, sustained working experience in schools or with young people. PGCE is usually the best option for recent graduates. GTP training is designed to suit individual needs. It is not a post-graduate certificate or degree qualification. GTP leads to the award of Qualified Teacher Status, conferred by the General Teaching Council.
