What is the Genesis Group?
The Genesis group is part of ETHOS (Educating Those Out of School) and
provides education for girls who are pregnant or who are mothers whilst
of school age.
If my child is pregnant
will she stay in mainstream school?
Wherever possible girls should stay in their mainstrean school in order
to take full advantage of the educational opportunities available for
them. However it is sometimes not appropriate for pupils to continue in
school. There may be all kinds of reasons for this. In such cases it is
the role of the teachers in ETHOS to provide educational support for them.
We believe that it is better for girls to be taught alongside their peers
and to this end the girls are taught in a group situation known as the
Genesis Group. The Group meets at the ETHOS base at Rawthorpe and because
of the difficulties of access, transport to and from the base for the
girls and their babies is provided.
What are the aims of
the teachers in the Genesis Group?
The aims of the teachers who work with the pupils may be expressed as follows:-
- to provide continuity of education for pregnant and post-natal schoolgirls
- to provide the opportunity for social contact and mutual support between
girls in a similar situation
- to provide a supportive framework for girls at a difficult time in their
lives
- to maintain useful links between home, school, social services and health
services
- to encourage and promote good ante-natal and post-natal care
- to provide information and education specifically related to pregnancy
and parenthood
Will my child attend
the Genesis Group full-time?
Attendance at the Group is from 9.30am to 3.30pm. Home teaching is provided during the 6 week post natal period and may be available for girls who are ill prior to their confinement.
Who is eligible for attendance
at the Group?
Any girl of school age who is pregnant, or who is a mother may be referred to ETHOS for educational support at the group. Girls in the sixth form may also attend in certain circumstances. A girl may be referred to the group from a variety of sources to the Referrals Manager at ETHOS.
What happens when my child has been referred to the Genesis Group?
Once a girl has been referred, a meeting is arranged between school, the girl and her carers/parents and ETHOS, when the options available are discussed and the provision at ETHOS is explained. This initial meeting is very important as it gives the girl and her guardian an opportunity to meet others in the group and see the facilities available. It is also the occasion for vital discussion about the girl's future, both educationally and in general terms.
What type of education
will my child receive at the Genesis Group?
The education which a girl receives is tailored to her individual needs
within the limits of the resources available.
Girls taking examination courses are encouraged to carry on with these
wherever possible and to take the examinations associated with them. In
order to to facilitate this the group teacher liaises with the girl's
school to discuss course content with school teachers. ETHOS is registered
as an examination centre so that examination papers may be completed at
the ETHOS base and also, subject to medical approval, at Huddersfield
Royal Infirmary and Dewsbury District Hospital.
