Providers of childcare and early education

First Books is administered by Kirklees Culture & Leisure Services and provides a free book and topic box loan service to all
early years and registered childcare providers in Kirklees, inclusive of private day nurseries, parent and toddler groups and
childminders.
The service gets central government funding from the Department of Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) through the Book Ahead initiative. This aims to get enjoyable books into the hands of young children in early years settings, to develop enjoyment of reading at an early stage and strengthen links between those settings and the local library service.
Books can either be self selected by visiting the First Books collection at Red Doles Lane, Huddersfield or can be packed and delivered to the nearest library or mobile halt. We have a wide range of books to choose from - board books, picture books, topic books, dual language and multi cultural books all arranged into subjects supporting the early years curriculum.
