Consultations 2010
A consultation on proposals to develop Heaton Avenue First and Nursery School as an all through primary school
Gillian Donohoe - February 2010
school.organisation@kirklees.gov.uk
The proposal
We propose to make changes to Heaton Avenue First and Nursery School to create an 'all-through' primary
school which would educate pupils aged 3 to 11 (including nursery provision). The new primary school would
ultimately be situated on the South Parade site from September 2014 following the remodelling of the West End
Middle School buildings, but initially the school would use the existing Heaton Avenue school sites and
buildings.
Once in its new building, the school would have an admission number of 30 places in each year, giving a total
of 210 places for 5 to11 year olds in the school (plus nursery provision). As part of the transitional
arrangements, until the new school building is ready, the school would maintain a Published Admission Number (PAN)
of 40 places until the PAN of 30 could be applied to the admission of pupils into the Reception class in the
modernised West End Middle School building on South Parade.
What would this mean?
Kirklees Council propose to make prescribed alterations to Heaton Avenue First and Nursery School from 1st
September 2011 to change the upper age limit from 9 to 11 years (plus nursery provision).
Heaton Avenue First and Nursery School would then relocate to the former West End Middle School site from 1st
September 2014.
Transition arrangements
How would the proposed changes affect my child currently at Heaton Avenue First and Nursery School?
The chart below shows how the changes would affect pupils each year as they progress through school.
Find the current year group for your child and follow the row across from September 2010.
- Current Year 4 pupils will transfer to Middle School in September. They will progress through years 5
and 6 at Middle School. The Middle Schools are planned to close in July 2012 and the pupils will then
transfer to Year 7 at Whitcliffe Mount – SBEC (parents are entitled to express a preference for other
secondary schools).
- Pupils in Year 3 and below will remain at Heaton Avenue until the end of Year 6 and then transfer to Year
7 at Whitcliffe Mount – SBEC (or another secondary school).
- The Heaton Avenue Primary School is planned to move to the building currently used by West End Middle
School in September 2014.
- The current Published Admission Number (PAN) of 40 and the existing Priority Admission Area (PAA) will
not change until the school moves to the West End building in September 2014. A new PAN of 30 and a revised
PAA will apply to admission into Reception from 2014 onwards.
- All pupils admitted to the school will be able to continue through to the end of Year 6.

Support for staff
Retaining our skilled teaching and support staff to maintain high standards of teaching and learning is
fundamental to our plans. We have been working with staff groups and trade unions to develop a human resources
(HR) framework to support staff transitions that will ensure processes are fair and support individuals in terms
of their career ambitions and personal aspirations.
