Batley Girls’ High School - Visual Arts College and Batley Business and Enterprise College
Gillian Donohoe - June 2009
school.organisation@kirklees.gov.uk
The proposal
To retain Batley Business and Enterprise College
(for 675 boys) on its current site at Batley Field Hill
and to relocate Batley Girls’ High School – Visual
Arts College (for 675 girls) to the same site,
developing both the two separate single gender
schools, with shared facilities, for a total of 1350
pupils aged 11-16.
A substantial investment would be made in
remodelling and enlarging the building to create
greatly improved facilities which would include
separate blocks within the building for boys and
girls.
This would mean prescribed alterations to:
• Decrease the size of Batley Business and
Enterprise College from 879 to 675 pupil places
from 1st September 2013
• Decrease the annual admission number of Batley
Business and Enterprise College from 175 to 135
from 1st September 2013
• Decrease the size of Batley Girls’ High School –
Visual Arts College from 1262 to 675 pupil places
from 1st September 2013
• Decrease the annual admission number of Batley
Girls’ High School – Visual Arts College from 210
to 135 from 1st September 2013
• Change the upper age limit of Batley Girls’ High
School – Visual Arts College from 18 to 16 years
from 1st September 2013 to close the sixth form
A possible federation between the two schools
would be explored along with collaborative
arrangements with other provision in the locality.
The proposal to close the sixth form at Batley Girls’
High School – Visual Arts College is part of overall
plans to develop a sixth form college based in
central Dewsbury initially for 400 to 500 students
with a view to expansion to 1000 places. The
opportunity to create outreach support in Batley
from the new Dewsbury 6th Form College to
supplement the main college offer would be
explored.
Who could attend
Priority would be given to pupils who live in the
planned admission areas currently served by the
following primary schools:
- Field Lane J I & N School
- Park Road J I & N School
- Manorfield I & N School
- Staincliffe CE (C) Junior School
- Purlwell I & N School
- Hyrstmount Junior School
- Warwick Road J I & N School
- Batley Parish CE (A) J I & N School
Support through changes
We are preparing detailed plans to plot the pathway
for pupils, parents and staff so that we can all
effectively manage with any proposed changes.
Maintaining stability and creating an improvement
in the current standards of our children’s education
will remain the backbone of everything we do.
The following pages show how the changes may
affect your child. The transition pathways do not
affect the rights of parents and carers to apply for a
place at other schools.
Support for staff
Retaining our skilled teaching and support staff to
maintain high standards of teaching and learning is
fundamental to our plans. We have been working
with staff groups and trade unions to develop a HR
framework to support staff transitions that will
ensure processes are fair and support individuals in
terms of their career ambitions and personal
aspirations.
