Timetable for transfer to secondary school in September 2011
Date What happens
From 12 September 2011 Transfer packs are distributed by primary schools or posted directly to parents of Kirklees children attending a primary school in another local authority.
Monday 12 September 2011 Online admissions are available.

September and October 2011 Open evenings are held for all secondary schools in Kirklees.
Monday 31 October 2011 This is the closing date for applications. Remember that a late application can severely reduce your chances of obtaining a place at your preferred school.
Thursday 1 March 2012 We will post your offer letter first-class on this date. Please remember this is the date on which your letter will be posted. If you have applied online you will receive an email offer on 1 March 2012.
Thursday 22 March 2012 This is the last day for requesting an appeal form for community and voluntary controlled schools. Voluntary aided schools, free schools, trust schools and academies may have different closing dates for appeals. You must contact them directly.
May to July 2012 Appeal hearings take place.
Last school day of the 2012/13 school year Waiting lists close.

About secondary schools in Kirklees
There are five types of secondary school in Kirklees. It is important to know which type of school you would like your child to go to because different people are responsible for making decisions on which children to admit. Either Kirklees Council, as the local authority, or the school governors decides who gets a place. The following list tells you who is responsible for making the decision for the particular type of school. Applications for all schools must be made on the Secondary Common Application Form (SCAF).

Community and voluntary controlled schools:
These are schools for which Kirklees Council provides the funding and is responsible for deciding who gets a place.
  • Almondbury High School and Language College
  • Batley Business and Enterprise College
  • Colne Valley Specialist Arts College
  • Earlsheaton Technology College
  • Holmfirth High School
  • Honley High School
  • King James's School
  • Netherhall Learning Campus High School
  • Newsome High School and Sports College

Voluntary aided schools
Kirklees Council provides funding for these schools, but the governors are responsible for deciding who is given a place at the school.

Trust schools
Trust schools are state funded foundation schools supported by a charitable trust and the governors are responsible for deciding who is given a place.

Academies
Academies and free schools are state schools that are independent of the local authority and funded directly by the Department for Education. The governors are responsible for deciding who is given a place at the school.

Re-oranisation in the Whitcliffe Mount Pyramid:

Schools within the Whitcliffe Mount Pyramid are changing from a 3-tier system of first, middle and high schools to a 2-tier system of primary and secondary schools between 2011 and 2013. Arrangements for pupils in September 2012 are described below:

Whitcliffe Mount – Specialist Business & Enterprise College (VC)

Revised proposals for the closure of Birkenshaw Middle School are planned to be the subject of statutory consultation in September-October 2011 that may affect arrangements for the school. Further details can be obtained from the school organisation and planning section http:www.kirklees.gov.uk/schoolorganisation

Whitcliffe Mount – Specialist Business & Enterprise College (VC) will have two relevant years of admission in September 2012.
  • Year 9 pupils will be admitted up to the PAN of 360 following the existing published admissions policy based on the existing PAA for the school.
  • Year 7 pupils (and year 8 pupils) displaced from Gomersal CE(C) Middle School, West End Middle School and Whitechapel Middle School which will close on 31st August 2012 will be transferred to the roll of Whitcliffe Mount – Specialist Business and Enterprise College (VC)*.
  • Additional Year 7 pupils (and year 8 pupils) up to a PAN of 270 will be admitted by normal transfer processes, following the admissions criteria below.†
    1. children in public care (looked after children)
    2. children who live in the school’s Priority Admission Area (PAA) who have an older brother or sister attending from the same address at the date of admission (the younger sibling rule)
    3. children who live in the school’s PAA
    4. children who live inside the PAAs for Birkenshaw CE(C) First & Nursery School or East Bierley CE(VC) First School (part of the historical PAA for Whitcliffe Mount - Specialist Business & Enterprise College (SBEC) who have an older brother or sister attending from the same address at the date of admission (the younger sibling rule)
    5. children who live inside the PAAs for Birkenshaw CE(C) First & Nursery School or East Bierley CE(VC) First School (part of the historical PAA for Whitcliffe Mount-SBEC)
    6. children who live outside the school’s PAA and the PAAs for Birkenshaw CE(C) First & Nursery School and East Bierley CE(VC) First School who have an older brother or sister attending from the same address at the date of admission (the younger sibling rule)
    7. children who live outside the school’s PAA and the PAAs for Birkenshaw CE(C) First & Nursery School and East Bierley CE(VC) First School.

The PAA for Whitcliffe Mount – Specialist Business and Enterprise College in 2012 for Year 7 and Year 8 pupils†
  • The Priority Admission Area (PAA) for Year 7 in 2012 (and Year 8) comprises the current PAAs of Gomersal First, High Bank F&N, Hightown, Heaton Avenue F&N, Howard Park Community, Whitechapel Church of England Primary (the new school replacing Moorend CE(C) First and St.Luke’s CE(VC) First School), Scholes F&N, Schools which will be all-through primary schools in September 2012.
  • Families living in the PAAs for Birkenshaw CE(C) First & Nursery School or East Bierley CE(VC) First School will have a second priority for places at Whitcliffe Mount –SBEC, above the priority for pupils living outside the historical PAA for the school, in recognition of the historical patterns of parental choice for Whitcliffe Mount – SBEC.

* This does not affect the rights of parents and carers to express a preference for a place at other schools
† Consultation about transitional arrangements for Birkenshaw Middle School pupils are scheduled to take place in September and October 2011 as part of the revised proposal to close the school.

Birkenshaw Middle School

  • The school will not admit pupils to Year 5, the normal first year, in September 2012.
  • The school is proposed to close on 31 August 2013. Revised proposals for the closure of Birkenshaw Middle School are planned to be the subject of statutory consultation in September-October 2011.
