Date What happens
Week beginning 31 October 2011 Kirklees infant and first schools distribute transfer packs or the School Admissions Team posts them directly to parents of children attending other schools on request.

Online admissions are available from this date.

Sunday 15 January 2012 You will be able to apply online until 11.59pm on this date. We must receive your application by this date. As this is a Sunday, we will also be accepting paper forms that we receive in the first post on Monday 16 January 2012. Remember that a late application can severely reduce your chances of obtaining a place at your preferred school.
Friday 20 April 2012 We will post your offer letter second-class on this date. Please remember this is the date on which your letter will be posted and not the date on which you will receive it. If you have applied online you will receive an email offer on 20 April 2012. Online applicants will also receive an offer letter.
Friday 11 May 2012 This is the last day for you to request an appeal form for community and voluntary controlled schools. Voluntary aided, free or trust schools may have different closing dates for appeals. You must contact them directly.
June to July 2012 Appeal hearings take place.
Last school day of the 2012/13 school year Waiting lists close.

Timetable for admission to the Reception age group in September 2012

About primary and middle schools in Kirklees
There are five types of primary school in Kirklees. It is important to know which type of school you would like your child to go to because different people are responsible for making decisions on which children to admit. Either Kirklees Council, as the local authority, or the school governors decide who gets a place. The following list tells you who is responsible for making the decision for the particular type of school. Applications for all schools must be made on the appropriate Common Application Form (TCAF for transfer to junior/middle school and PCAF for admission to reception).

Most schools in Kirklees are community or voluntary controlled schools.

These are schools for which Kirklees Council provides the funding and is responsible for deciding who gets a place. Voluntary controlled schools have VC in their name. Community schools generally do not use community in their name.

Voluntary aided school

Kirklees Council provides funding for these schools, but the governors are responsible for deciding who is given a place at the school. The Church of England voluntary aided schools have VA in their name. Catholic primary schools are voluntary aided schools but do not use either word in their name.

Academies

Academies and free schools are state schools that are independent of the local authority and funded directly by the Department for Education. The governors are responsible for deciding who is given a place. Lindley Junior School is an academy and Batley Grammar School (Primary Phase) is a free school.

Trust schools

Trust schools are state funded foundation schools supported by a charitable trust and the governors are responsible for deciding who is given a place.

School reorganisation

Changes for 2012

Almondbury CE (VC) Infant and Nursery School changes from a voluntary controlled school to become a voluntary aided school in September 2012.

Brownhill St Saviours CE (VA) Junior school is proposed to change from a voluntary aided school and become a voluntary controlled school in April 2012.

Academies

Some schools in Kirklees have recently become academies and are listed below. Academies are independent schools funded by the government. The governing body of an academy decides its own policy on admissions and takes responsibility for offering school places.

Batley Grammar School became a ‘Free School’ and will offer primary, secondary and sixth form places from September 2011. Free schools are non-profit making, independent, state-funded schools.

Lindley Junior School will become an academy in October 2011.

Trust school proposals

There are several primary schools in the Liversedge area that are proposing to become trust schools from January 2012. It is proposed that this will be part of a locality-based arrangement called ‘The Spenborough Cooperative Trust’ along with Spen Valley Sports College and Fairfield Special School. The local primary schools are; Cawley Lane Junior, Infant and Nursery School, Leeside Community Primary School, Littletown Junior, Infant and Nursery School, Millbridge Junior Infant and Nursery School, Norristhorpe Junior and Infant School, as well as, Headlands CE(VC) Junior Infant and Nursery School and Roberttown CE(VC) Junior and Infant School who would be associate members.

Reorganisation in the Whitcliffe Mount pyramid

Schools within the Whitcliffe Mount pyramid are changing from a 3-tier system of first, middle and high schools to a 2-tier system of primary and secondary schools between 2011 and 2013. Arrangements for pupils in September 2012 are described below.

Birkenshaw CE(VC) First and Nursery School & East Bierley CE(C) First School First schools in Birkenshaw and East Bierley will keep 9 year old pupils up to age 11 from September 2012

  • Pupils who are currently in year 4 will remain at the first school for their year 5 and 6 education and there is no requirement to complete any transfer forms.
  • All children aged 5 starting first school in September 2012 will stay at the school until they are aged 11 and then transfer to a secondary school in September 2018.


Birkenshaw Middle School

Revised proposals for the closure of Birkenshaw Middle School are planned to be the subject of statutory consultation in September-October 2011 that may affectarrangements for the school.   • The school will not admit pupils to Year 5, the normal first year, in September 2012.
  • The school is proposed to close on 31 August 2013 and consultation about transitional arrangements for Birkenshaw Middle School pupils are scheduled to take place in September and October 2011 as part of the revised proposal to close the school.
