What is happening to first and middle schools in the Birkenshaw, Cleckheaton and Gomersal areas?
Kirklees Council is changing the 3-tier system of first schools (5-9), middle schools (9-13) and high school (13-18) to a 2-tier system of primary schools (5-11) and secondary schools (11-16) in the Birkenshaw, Cleckheaton and Gomersal areas.
Birkenshaw Middle School is planned to close in August 2013. Pupils transferring to Year 5 in Birkenshaw Middle School in September 2011 would spend 2 years at the middle school up to age 11 in 2013. There would then be a place available in Year 7 at the new academy at Howden Clough. Parents would be able to apply for their child to transfer in 2013 to any other secondary school with places available in Year 7.
Gomersal CE (C) Middle School, West End Middle School and Whitechapel Middle school are planned to close in August 2012. There would be no admissions into Year 5 in these schools in September 2011. Current year 4 pupils would remain at their current schools for their year 5 and 6 education and there is no requirement to complete any transfer forms. There would then be a place available in year 7 at Whitcliffe Mount - Specialist Business and Enterprise College from 2013, but parents would be able to apply for their child to transfer to any secondary school.
Maintaining and improving the current standards of education alongside a commitment to ensure any transitions are well planned
means that you can confidently express a preference for any of the schools that are proposed to change.
How would the proposed changes affect children aged 5 starting first school in September 2011?
First schools in Birkenshaw and East Bierley would keep 9-year old pupils up to age 11 from September 2012.
First schools in Cleckheaton* and Gomersal would keep 9 year olds from September 2011.
All children aged 5 starting first school in September 2011 would stay at the school until they are aged 11 and then transfer to
a secondary school in September 2018.
* If the planned change from a 3-tier to 2-tier system is confirmed, it is likely that there will be further consultation and a final decision about the proposal to bring together Moorend CE (C) First School and St Luke's CE(C) First School to create an all-through primary school that would educate pupils aged 5 to 11. The new primary school would ultimately be situated on the Whitechapel Road site from September 2013 following the remodelling of the Whitechapel Middle School buildings, but initially the school would use the existing Moorend and St Luke's school sites and buildings.
Once in its new building, the school would have an admission number of 60 places in each year, giving a total of 420 places for 5 to 11 year olds in the school. As part of the transitional arrangements, until the new school building is ready, the school would maintain a PAN of 30 places at the Moorend site and 18 places at the
St Luke's site (48 places in total) until the full PAN of 60 could be applied to the admission of pupils into the Reception class in the modernised Whitechapel Road building.
What is happening to Bradley CE (VC) Infant & Nursery School and Bradley CE (VC) Junior School?
In September 2011 these two schools became a single all-through CE (VC) junior, infant and nursery school. The new school is called St Thomas CE (VC) Primary School. Parents with pupils currently in year 2 do not need to complete a PCAF form, and pupils will move into year 3 automatically.
