There are 3 steps to increase your safety at home:  Stop, Chain and Check!

Stop

First:  Stop - are you expecting anyone?  Before you answer the front door, check that all other doors are locked and closed.  Make sure that door keys or car keys are not left by doors and windows.

Chain

Second:  Chain - put the door bar or chain on.  Look through the spy hole, if your door has one, or the window, to see who it is.  Always keep the door bar or chain on while you are talking to the person on your doorstep.

Check

Third:  Check - check and double check that the caller is genuine.  Ask for the caller's Identification.  Check it by SMS, email or fax.  Doorstep criminals or bogus callers can look just like a genuine caller.

Many Deaf people are victims of rogue workmen or plausible sales people, who trick their way into homes to steal goods or demand large amounts of money for little or no service.

To report a suspected doorstep criminal or suspected bogus callers contact West Yorkshire Police phone 0845 6060606 or contact West Yorkshire Trading Standards on phone 08454 040506.

Don't forget the three steps:

Stop

Chain

Check
