What do I do if a member of my family or a friend needs help from Adult Social Care Services?

If you think that you, a member of your family, a friend or neighbour would benefit by receiving a service, you should contact a Gateway to care straight away. You can do this by e-mail, telephone or by visiting the office.

When you first contact us, we will ask you some questions about your situation, and the type of help that you think you may need.

We may be able to help you straight away, but if we need more information about your circumstances, we will arrange for a member of staff to come and visit you in your own home. This person is called an assessor.

They will talk to you about the problems that you are having, and together, you will agree the type of help and services that you will receive. This is a Community Care Assessment.

We can only provide this service after we have made a Community Care Assessment . This helps us to make sure that we are providing the right services to people who need them the most.

If you have a relative, friend, or neighbour who helps to look after you (a carer), then they can ask for a Carer's Assessment too. This helps to make sure that you are both getting the help and support that you need.
If you would like to e-mail questions directly to a Gateway to care use the Gateway to care enquiry form.

We have guidance called "eligibility criteria" to work out if you are eligible for adult social care services. Our social workers and care officers use the criteria to make sure we treat everyone fairly and that people who meet the criteria for help receive services.
