Standards you can expect from us

Here are summaries of key policies that we use to make sure the support you receive is of high quality. To see the policies in full please contact your Home Support office.

Quality assurance

Kirklees Council is committed to continuously improving its standards of service delivery.

Within four to six weeks of commencing the service, all people who use our services will be visited by a Domiciliary Care Co-ordinator to obtain their views and to make sure that the service is meeting their needs. This is called a quality visit. This information is then used in the service planning processes.

The Kirklees Council Home Support Service is registered with and inspected by the Care Quality Commission and must deliver its services following prescribed legislation, regulations and standards. The Care Quality Commission holds a copy of this Service User Guide and our Statement of Purpose. You can obtain a copy of the service's Statement of Purpose, by contacting your Home Support office.

Confidentiality

In line with the Data Protection Act any information about you will be treated in confidence. This will not be shared with other people outside Kirklees Council adult social care services without your permission.

The only time staff can break this confidentiality is where there is:
  • danger to yourself
  • danger to others
  • the law is being broken, or
  • information is needed by internal and external inspectors for monitoring reasons. For example, the Care Quality Commission may need to check the service is meeting legal obligations.

Access to files

Information will be shared between home support staff and the managers involved in your care. A central file will be kept in a secure place at the main office and you can ask to see it by contacting:-
  • Information Access Officer,01484 225985.

Insurance

Kirklees Council will only pay claims where Kirklees Council staff have been personally negligent while carrying out their work. We ask that you take out a personal insurance policy to cover yourself on a day-to-day basis.

Advocacy - speaking up for yourself

Sometimes it can be difficult to explain to us what you want, or what you think you need. An advocate can help you to put your views across, by helping you to work out what you want to say, or if you prefer, by speaking to you.

If you would like to be put in touch with an independent advocate, please contact Gateway to care.

Medication

We are able to prompt your medication and we will work closely with District Nurses to make sure that you are offered help with your medication if further support is required.

We are able to apply prescribed creams, if it has been identified as a need and a risk assessment has been undertaken. We are able to perform some basic healthcare tasks.

Assistance with moving, handling and transfers

We are able to help you if you have difficulty moving or transferring, for example from your bed to a chair. This must be identified as a need, with a risk assessment having been undertaken and a Movement and Handling Plan in place.

Handling your money and finances

Where identified we can support you with your finances. If staff collect your pension and other benefits, a receipt book will be used to record these amounts. This book will be kept in your home. This book will also be used to record details of shopping and payments of bills.

Access to your home

We will arrange with you for safe access to your home. All staff carry an identification badge. They are happy to show you this if you ask them to.

Gifts and legacies

Under no circumstances should a gift of money be accepted by staff.

The receipt of personal gifts and legacies through staff duties must also be strongly discouraged. Nothing must be done which may be seen as the acceptance of a gift for services given.

Keeping you safe from harm

Everyone should be able to live their life free from fear and harm but some people are not always able to protect themselves as they are vulnerable because of their age, mental capacity or disability.

The training our staff receive

All staff have a full induction with Kirklees Council. This includes an introduction to the organisation and training, covering in-house practice and overviews of all Kirklees Council policies and procedures, including government legislation.
