Residential Care

There are four types of residential care available from Kirklees Adult Social Care.

Long-term care

For some people, it can become difficult to continue living at home because of increasing personal needs.

Where older people become unable to look after themselves at home, we can provide personal care and somewhere comfortable to live within a residential or nursing home.

Although staff provide care 24 hours a day, all residents are encouraged to be as independent as possible, and to treat the home as their own home. Residents can bring some personal items of furniture into their rooms subject to fire risk assessment, and can make arrangements to go out, or to receive visitors, whenever they want.

Short-term care or respite care

Short-term breaks offer carers the chance to take break from caring for a disabled, ill, or frail elderly person. This helps carers to take a break when they feel they need it, and be confident that the person they look after is receiving the best of care.

Intermediate care or rehabilitation

This service provides short stays for people who have been discharged from hospital, or who just need some time and help to adjust before returning home. We provide support to people who have mobility, dietary or emotional needs. Specially trained staff help you to regain your confidence and independence before you go back home.

Emergency care

We have a number of emergency beds available, should the need arise for example the main carer is taken ill and no alternative care package can be made available.

In Kirklees there are four council owned residential homes and around 69 privately owned homes residential and nursing care homes.

If you are thinking about residential care, you can get a copy of our 'Guide to residential and nursing care' leaflets from your local Gateway to Care office. Alternatively, you can use the Gateway to Care enquiry form, and we will post a copy out to you.

Everyone staying in a residential home will pay something towards the cost of their care.

The amount that you pay will depend on:
  • the amount that the home charges, and
  • how much income, property and savings you have.

Anyone with savings, property or investments of over £21,500 will pay the full amount that the home charges. We will not include the value of your home if your husband or wife continues to live there, or if you are only staying in a residential home temporarily.

If you have any questions please contact your local Gateway to Care. Alternatively, you can use the Gateway to Care enquiry form, and we will post a copy out to you.
