Kirklees Sensory Services provide a drop-in service, by appointment, for Deaf and hard of hearing people:
  • Wednesday mornings at Dewsbury Town Hall
  • Friday mornings at Civic Centre 1 in Huddersfield
We can help you to fill out forms, make phone calls for you and give advice and information about other services. Following an assessment we can arrange for you to collect pieces of equipment from the drop-in sessions and show you how to use it.

Please contact Sensory Services to make an appointment:
The Kirklees Interpreting Service interprets between British Sign Language and English for Deaf and hearing impaired people. Should you need an interpreter in emergency, organisations such as hospitals or the police will hold a list of interpreters who work out of office hours.
The centre offers social and recreational facilities.
Kirklees Council provides services for people who are Deaf or hearing impaired and live in Kirklees.
If you would like to learn sign language, contact your local college. You will need to make sure that the course is certified by Signature and that the course tutor has a teaching qualification, as well as qualifications at the level or a level above, that which is being taught.

Levels 1, 2, and 3 will give you the skills to have a conversation with a person who is profoundly Deaf and communicates using sign language. They will not give you the ability to translate or interpret.

To become an interpreter you will need levels 1,2 and 3 in Communication Skills in British Sign Language. After this you will need to apply for a place on a university interpretation course. For information about academic courses and fees, contact Signature.
