Walking Sticks

Team Manager October 2011

If you find that you are struggling to walk and think that a walking stick would help you, you can either
  • buy a walking stick yourself from a disability equipment shop, or
  • make an appointment to see your doctor, who can arrange for a walking stick free of charge
If your doctor agrees that you need a walking stick, he will give you a letter of referral, which you can take to (KICES) Kirklees Integrated Community Equipment Service.

Hints for using your walking stick correctly
If you are using a single walking stick, always use this in the opposite hand to the affected leg.

To measure the correct length for your walking stick, crutches, or walking frame, you should stand as straight as possible with your arms by your side.

The handle of the stick, crutches or frame should be level with the outside bone of your wrist.
