What is the Common Assessment Framework (CAF)?

The CAF is a way of getting the help and support that you need. If your parents need help to look after you the CAF might also be able to help them. It will make sure that you only have to tell your story once to get the help that you need.

What will happen?

The person who fills in the CAF form, can be anybody who is already working with you and that you know and trust.

It could be a learning mentor, drugs worker, nurse, youth worker or worker that you know.

They will sit down and talk to you, find out what the problems are that you need help with and write all this information on to a form.

If you agree they will ask the people who might be able to help you to come to a meeting with you and your parents, if you want them to be there, to try to get you the help.

At this meeting you can help decide what help you want and who is going to be your Lead Professional.

That is who is going to be the person that you contact from the meeting.

All of these people will work together to give you the best kind of help that is available.

Who will have the information about me?

Usually the information on the CAF will only be shared with the people or staff that you agree should have it. But there may be times when it may have to be shared without asking you first.

These times may be:
  • if they need to find something out urgently if you or someone else is at risk of harm
  • to help you are someone else who is at harm
  • to stop a crime.
If one of these things happens you will always be told as soon as possible.

What is a Lead Professional?

If there are lots of people helping you at the same time, it can be a bit confusing for you to keep track. At the meeting you would all decide which of the group of people will be the Lead Professional.

This Lead Professional will listen to what you say, support you and make sure that you understand what everyone is doing.
