- About the Common Assessment Framework (CAF)
Handbook for Practitioners- For everyone who works with children, young people and families, whether they are employed or volunteers, and working in the public, private or voluntary sectors.
- For staff working in health, education, early years and childcare, safeguarding, youth offending, police, Young People's Service and Connexions services, advisory and support services, leisure and so on.
- Also for practitioners who work in services for adults, as many of the adults accessing those services are also mothers, fathers or carers.

Most children will not need a CAF. A CAF is for children and young people with additional needs. These are children
and young people who, according to the judgement of practitioners, require extra support to help them achieve the five Every Child Matters outcomes:
The Common Assessment Framework (CAF) provides a common method of assessment across all children's services. It will:
- to be healthy
- to stay safe
- to enjoy and achieve
- to make a positive contribution
- to achieve economic well being.
The Common Assessment Framework (CAF) provides a common method of assessment across all children's services. It will:
- help in the early identification of needs
- lead to co-ordinated provision of services
- promote information sharing to avoid the duplication of assessments
- reduce the need for children and their families to re tell their story to different practitioners.
