The Benefits of being a Shared Lives Carer

Being a Shared Lives carer is a rewarding and worthwhile experience. You have the chance of giving something while you gain the satisfaction from seeing a person develop through their relationship with you.

The more you give, the more you get back.

Shared Lives carers come from a variety of backgrounds. Everyone has different amounts of time to offer and we can match the time available with someone who will value your support.

Who can become a Shared Lives carer?

To become a Shared Lives carer you don’t need to be an expert. No professional qualifications are required as training is provided. All you need are the life skills you already have – a desire to care for someone and an ability to treat people with respect, patience and warmth.

You just need to care.

If you offer Shared Lives care in your own home either for a short break or long-term, everyone in your home needs to be 'on board'.

Do I work with just one person?

Some Shared Lives carers like the chance to work with a few people, offering short breaks or sessions. Other Shared Lives carers prefer the continuity of working with just one person. The only right answer is what works best for the people involved in the partnership.

How do I become a Shared Lives carer?

If you would like to find out more about becoming a Shared Lives carer, please complete the enquiry form and a member of our team will be happy contact you to discuss your interest in more detail.

To become a Shared Lives carer you will need to complete a short training course. This is a mixture of awareness raising and addressing the practical issues of supporting someone who has additional needs. It is a personalised plan that takes into account your existing experiences and your time commitments.

We use case studies to lead conversations, as an easy way to learn at your own pace. You will have support through the whole process from a member of the Shared Lives team.

"It was one thing to know the theory, but the thought of doing it in reality was daunting. The support from the team really helped and now I have worked with 11 people in the last 5 years. It makes me feel good, content. It makes life worth living."

What sort of things will I be doing?

The things you will be doing as a carer depends on the length and type of care you have chosen to give and on the person that you will be supporting.

Whether it is a short break or a long-term placement, Shares Lives is about leading your ordinary life and giving another person the chance to be included in what you do. From walking the dog, going to the cinema to going on holiday, it's all about building a relationship between you and the person you are caring for.

Do carers on the scheme get paid?

As a Shared Lives carer you will be paid an allowance for the support you provide. This allowance is not a salary, but after covering your costs, will provide some financial reward for your care. The experiences you gain are invaluable. The money helps.
