If you would like to learn sign language, contact your local college. You will need to make sure that the course is certified by CACDP (Council for Advancement in Communication with Deaf People) and that the course tutor has a teaching qualification, as well as qualifications at the level or a level above, that which is being taught.

Levels 1, 2, and 3 will give you the skills to have a conversation with a person who is profoundly deaf and communicates using sign language. They will not give you the ability to translate or interpret.

To become an interpreter you will need levels 1,2 and 3 in Communication Skills in British Sign Language. After this you will need to apply for a place on a University interpretation course. For information about academic courses and fees, contact CACDP (Council for Advancement in Communication with Deaf People).
