I am concerned about the welfare of an animal, who should I contact?
Unfortunately, the local authority cannot deal with every issue relating to animal welfare.
However, generally speaking, we will investigate allegations relating to the welfare of
animals on farm premises, ie, cattle, sheep, pigs, goats and poultry. The Animal Health
Inspector will also investigate complaints about farm animals in transit, at livestock
markets and reports of dead farm animals.
We will also investigate alleged problems with animals kept in or on premises licensed by
Kirklees eg dangerous wild animals, animals in pet shops, riding establishments, catteries,
boarding kennels, etc. We also check on the welfare of animals which are part of visiting
circuses.
Appropriate action will be taken, depending on the circumstances found upon investigation.

The

may be willing to investigate complaints relating to the welfare of other animals, eg cats,
domestic pets, dogs left in cars, exotic pets, etc depending on the staff resources they have
available. They can be contacted on

I am thinking of setting up a smallholding, which Service do I contact for advice?
The Animal Health Inspector from the Animal Welfare Team will be able to offer advice:
Do animals need a licence to be moved ?
Following the recent Foot and Mouth Disease outbreak the legislation on animal movements is
complex and changes frequently. However, movement licences generally only apply to farm
animals, ie cattle, sheep, pigs, goat and farmed boar and deer.
For advice on the up-to-date requirements, you should contact the Animal Health Inspector:
