The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett
Is reading a hobby?
The question is posed by Alan Bennett in "The Uncommon Reader". He appears to have been born in the same year as me, but he is known more to me as a writer for stage, radio, television and film. This book I read for pure amusement. I know Alan Bennett is a great writer (Diane tells me so having read his large books) but on searching the book shop I nearly missed this one, it is quite a slim volume. A happy evening's reading later I was well on my way.
I defy anyone not to smile at the narrative. The sheer idea of someone who does not read books must be alien to our members, so the story of our Queen developing a love of books must appeal to us all. The human angle is well written, in reality I am sure she is more approachable than is assumed, therefore this book is a happy read.
Comments from the book:
A reader is a "spectator"
but a writer is a "doer"…
…so keep on doing.
