Spanish Rose, Yorkshire Thorns by Marta Cardona
As this book purported to be by a local writer with a local setting we decided to purchase a copy to review for you. It is a story of a young couple emigrating to Yorkshire from Catalonia but the Yorkshire portrayed bears no resemblance to the 1950s and 1960s which I knew. I found the writing hard to get on with; it contains far too much irrelevant detail. Do we need to know every step along the way as Maria finds her husband is selfish, leaving her to deal with all their problems and look after their children? She should have followed her instincts of page 3 and not waited until page 532. Sorry, but I found this a very annoying book.
An article in a recent newspaper describes as "misery lit" books where there is triumph over adversity, which this one qualifies for. I am willing to be proved wrong. Let me know if you have any opinions on this.
Incidentally, the sun does shine in England and Summer does arrive for those who wish to see it. They never seemed to find any!
