This months choice - Room at the top by John Braine

"Room at the Top" by John Braine

Joe Lampton is an ambitious young man who has moved to the town of Warley to take up a position with the Municipal Treasury having recently been demobilised from the armed forces. He takes lodgings in the so-called, `better part of town', with the Thompsons, a middle-class couple.

Joe comes from a near impoverished family who live in a North Country town, but he is determined to fight his way up the social ladder.

The Thompsons introduce Joe to an amateur dramatic society, where he meets Susan Brown, the only daughter of a very successful business man.

Although Susan already has a dashing and upper-class fiancé, she becomes involved with Joe. So involved in fact, she becomes pregnant. Joe finds himself being threatened by Susan's father to marry her. The reality is that Joe is very pleased to oblige.

There is someone else in the equation, by the name of Alice Aisgill, an older woman with whom Joe has been having a torrid affair. He ends the relationship but with fatal consequences...
